Childcare Options in the UK

There are a number of childcare options in the UK. Below we describe some of the options available in the UK, so you can choose the perfect option for your family.

Childminder

Childminders are self-employed and take care of children within their own home. They usually work flexible hours. If you are considering a childminder in the UK, you should ensure they are registered with one of the below:

– Ofsted (England)

– Care Inspectorate (Scotland)

– Care and Social Service Inspectorate (Wales)

– Health and Social Services Trust (Northern Ireland)

Day Nurseries

Day nurseries offer care to children from birth to 5 years old. There are different kind of nurseries including private, community, local authority and workplace nurseries. The number of children being cared for will vary from nursery to nursery.

Pre-School Playgroup

A playgroup generally offers three-hour morning or afternoon sessions during the school term. They are usually run by private individuals or charities and are for children between three and five years old.

After School Club

If your child is over five and you work after school hours, you can send him or her to an afterschool club. They are designed to help parents balance work and family commitments, while providing children with a broader range of experiences and interests.

Nannies

An Au Pair is an individual from outside the UK that lives with your family. They are generally in the UK to learn the language and culture. They provide around 30 hours of childcare in exchange for a bedroom, meals and pocket money.
