What is Maintenance?
In order to qualify for a Tier 2 (General) Visa, you must score 10 points for maintenance funds as part of your application for leave to enter or leave to remain. If you are already in the UK under another UK Government immigration category, you will automatically get 10 points without having to prove you can support yourself. If you are outside the UK applying for a Tier 2 Visa, you can score 10 points by showing one of the below:
1.You have personal savings equivalent to £945 in your bank account for three months at the time your application is made
or
2. Your sponsor will maintain and accommodate you until the end of your first month of work in the UK when you will be paid. Your sponsor must confirm this on the Certificate of Sponsorship.
What about dependents?
Some nurses who apply for a Tier 2 visa wish to bring their dependent family members along with them.
A dependent family member includes the following:
- Spouse
- Children under 18
To satisfy the maintenance requirement you need to show that you have £945 for your own maintenance funds and a further £630 for each dependent you intend to bring. If your employer agrees to provide you with maintenance, this will also include your dependents.
If you need to show your bank balance for maintenance, please ensure your statement includes the following:
- Name
- Account #
- Date
- Bank Name & Logo
- Transactions over 90 days
- Sufficient funds in the account
If your hospital has not ticked the maintenance box on your COS
If your hospital has agreed to provide you with maintenance but failed to tick the maintenance box on your COS application, they can simply add an additional note. This will not affect your Tier 2 visa application.
